Seventy-two Fredonia State student-athletes were cited by the State University of New York Athletic Conference for their academic achievement during the Spring 2008 semester. Among the honorees were 39 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List, for varsity athletes who completed their entire season and maintained a GPA of 3.3 for three semesters.

The Fredonia State Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2008 will include three multiple-choice All-Americans, the Hall's first softball inductee, and a former athletic trainer who now plies his trade with the Buffalo Bills of the NFL. Hall of Fame committee members meeting in March selected Chris Hughey, Chris Whitmore, Robert Healy, Melanie (Yaskulski) Deemer, and Bud Carpenter (Buffalo Bills trainer, in photo) for induction Oct. 18 on campus.

The Brigham Road entrance to SUNY Fredonia’s campus is closed until further notice while crews undertake a redesign of Lake Way Drive and the parking area in front of University Stadium. Plans call for transforming this entrance to create an attractive roadway to, and dramatic highlight of, the new soccer stadium.

The women's lacrosse team is participating in the SUNYAC tournament Friday, Dec. 2, after 12 years of missing out. They will face No. 1 seed, tournament host, and No. 23 ranked Cortland at 12:30 p.m. Friday, while No. 2 seed Buffalo State and No. 3 Brockport will square off at 3 p.m. The two Friday winners will play noon Saturday for the SUNYAC title and the automatic NCAA Division III tournament berth.

Fredonia State junior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/ Arlington) finished second Friday in the women's 20-pound weight throw at the NCAA Division III Track and Field championships held at Ohio Northern University. Friday's second-place finish earned Hopson her second All-American honor in the event. She became the third Blue Devil woman in history to earn runner-up status at the NCAAs.

Fredonia State junior Julia Hopson of Poughkeepsie/Arlington won the women's 20-pound weight throw at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship meet recently, where she also finished second in the women's shot put event. Hopson's winning throw was measured at 16.31 meters, which converts to 53 feet, 6 1/4 inches. In the process, she earned 10 points for her team. Also finishing second for the women was freshman Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) in the 55-meter high hurdles in a season-best 8.74 seconds.

Pink the Rink ’08 was held Friday, February 8th, at the Steele Hall Ice Arena. The Fredonia State Blue Devils won against SUNYAC rival Cortland.

As summer employees of Watershow Productions, Inc., three Blue Devil divers played the roles of dysfunctional pirates in search of a treasure map. However, they didn’t perform on an ordinary stage, or even a stationary one: their theatrical set was an inflatable pirate ship which partially concealed two three-meter diving boards and a tower with small platforms that extended as high as 50 feet.

The men's ice hockey team captured the SUNYAC title in its 6-4 defeat of Plattsburgh on Saturday, March 3. The first round NCAA Division III pitted them against Middlebury College Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. in Middlebury, Vt., where the Blue Devils lost 9-0, finishing the season at 15-10-0.
