The Chautauqua County Historical Society is pleased to announce that on Friday, Sept. 19, SUNY Fredonia music students will have an opportunity to study with soprano Maria Ferrante and pianist Lincoln Mayorga during a master class on campus prior to their performance at the Fredonia Opera House.

The 28,000-square-foot project, which replaces the long-standing Connections cafeteria, includes the complete renovation of the entire lower level of the Williams Center.

Rosch Recital Hall, Judy Shepard, mother of hate-crime victim Matthew Shepard, will explain how the tragedy of her son’s murder in 1998 spurred her campaign for justice and ultimately led to the founding of the Matthew Shepard Foundation to help carry on his legacy.

SUNY Fredonia Assistant Professor of Biology Patricia Astry,’81, has been promoted to chairperson of the university’s biology department. Since 1981, she has been director of the Medical Technology degree program at SUNY Fredonia. She was honored with the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2001, and succeeds Dr. Ted Lee who had been chair of the department since 2005. She is the first female chair the department has had since it was formed in the late 1960s.
