Local music lovers can feast their ears on magnificent chamber works performed by some of the world’s most talented young artists as The Quartet Program launches its third season in residence at SUNY Fredonia. The internationally renowned Ying Quartet opens the season with a special guest artist recital on June 28.

One of SUNY Fredonia's most inspirational graduates, Roberta Guaspari, will be the featured guest at the School of Music's annual convocation on Friday, May 9. An advocate for music education in public schools, Ms. Guaspari's story has been told via the feature film, "Music of the Heart," and the documentary, "Small Wonders."

A variety of small and large jazz ensembles will be featured on the first concert, including the SUNY Fredonia Big Band, the NSB Octet, the Meghan Koch Project and PEgan & the MagooGoo Dolls

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music presents the final Flute Ensemble concert of the year on Tuesday, April 29 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus. This event is free and open to the public.  The twelve-member ensemble, known as Flutasia, is directed by Dr. Susan Royal. The program features composers such as J.C. Bach, Catherine McMichael, James Hook, Palestrina, and SUNY Fredonia composition professor, Rob Deemer. This concert features the world premiere performance of a flute arrangement of Deemer’s piece, “Looking Glass.”

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music presents a Guitar Ensemble Concert on Tuesday, April 22 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public. 

This eight-member student ensemble, under the direction of guitar professor James Piorkowski (in photo), will perform works by John Dowland, J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Joaquin Turina, Lennon/McCartney, and a piece written by ensemble director, James Piorkowski entitled “Leaping and Dancing for Joy.”

The Fredonia Chamber Singers will present its annual Post-Tour Spring Concert on Sunday, April 6 at 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. This is the 27th year that the group has performed in high schools throughout New York State during its Spring Break. Under the direction of Dr. Donald P. Lang, the concert is free and open to the public.

The week-long residency of pianist James Nalley will culminate on Cello Day, Sunday, March 16, when he accompanies Cello Professor Natasha Farny in a guest recital that includes students from Professor Farny’s cello studio. The recital starts at 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. Selected as the 2008 International Steinway Artist, Nalley continues an active performing career while also teaching piano at the College of Music at Florida State University

The Ethos New Music Society at SUNY Fredonia presents the Eighth Annual NewSound Music Festival, March 4 through 14 on campus. This year’s festival focuses on electronic music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and will feature appearances from up-and-coming composer Missy Mazzoli and electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick. Missy Mazzoli: presents a lecture and performance of her works with faculty members Kay Stonefelt and Tiffany Nicely on Tuesday, March 11, at 8 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall.

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music presents the second 20th Century Music Concert on Saturday, March 15, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall, including the performance of a new work by new composition professor, Robert Deemer. The concert is free and open to the public. The second of a two-concert series, it is designed to be “user-friendly,” and will include detailed program notes as well as discussion from the stage between works.

An evening of music, dance, and poetry celebrating the lives of three prominent Latinas is planned Monday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in the performance of the play, "Tres Vidas," by an ensemble of musicians and an actress, the Core Ensemble. This chamber music and theatre event will be performed in Juliet J. Rosch Recital. Admission is free and open to the public.

The clear, resounding pitch produced by Dresden-style timpani can now be heard during performances in both the intimate Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall and spacious King Concert Hall, as well as in student percussion lessons at the SUNY Fredonia School of Music. The five new timpani, valued at nearly $50,000, were purchased as part of the equipment renovation project for the new Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music announces a performance by world-renown and Grammy-winning composer and violin/fiddle virtuoso, Mark O'Connor.  He will perform a solo recital on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. in the Rosch Recital Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music presents a guest artist concert with pianist Logan Skelton on Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.  A master class with Fredonia piano students is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 29 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.  Both events are free and open to the public.  

School of Music violin professor Maureen Yuen will present an evening of music with her faculty colleague and pianist Sang Woo Kang on March 20 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. The program includes works by Igor Stravinsky, Beethoven and Saint-Saens.  This event is re-scheduled from Feb. 15.
