Graduate students and undergraduates took two courses this summer offered by SUNY Fredonia's English Department that included an educational trip to London, England. The courses, focusing on women's literature and major authors, were taught by professors Jeanette McVicker and Adrienne McCormick.

Six undergraduates have just finished the first annual six-week study-abroad program in Mexico this summer at the Ollin Tlahtoalli Centro de Lenguas y Cultura Mexicana. Located in Oaxaca, the center is dedicated to preserving endangered Mexican indigenous languages, the teaching of Spanish within a Mexican cultural framework, and the promotion of Mexican culture and traditions.

More than 130 students are following their Fredonia professors abroad to study  art, literature, science, politics, education, architecture, and culture, the International Education Center announced.

Catherine Riedesel of Ripley, N.Y. has received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 to support her semester abroad studying at the College Consortium for International Studies in Bangalore, India.

Currently a junior at SUNY Fredonia, where she is majoring in social studies education, Ms. Reidesel’s plans for the spring semester are helping to fulfill a personal goal she has to visit every continent on the globe. She has already been to North and South America, Europe, and Africa. 

To the advantage of her audiences, filmmaker Nefin Dinc’s eyes become theirs. A documentary filmmaker allowed to follow a group of whirling dervishes behind the scenes as they prepare for a ceremony in Turkey, she turned her camera on a 12-year old girl who was undergoing the spiritual and physical training to perform the ancient devotional dance. “I wanted to show a glimpse of Islamic life in Turkey,” the SUNY Fredonia communication professor said.

A Study Abroad Fair is being held Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Williams Center. Sponsored by the International Education Office, the fair will feature representatives from other schools which sponsor study abroad programs, Fredonia study abroad program information, help on how to get financial aid to study abroad, and former study abroad students who can answer every question imaginable!

April is Jewish History Month and this year JSU will start the month with their 7th annual Matzo Ball on Tuesday, April 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Williams Center Multi-Purpose Room

Fredonia is the latest institution in the SUNY network to sign onto an international dual-diploma, joint-degree program that was established in 2003 with the Turkish Council of Higher Education. The newest agreement  will see 30 university students from Izmir, Turkey entering Fredonia in the Fall of 2007 to earn degrees in either computer science or international studies.
