Telarc International, a prominent record label in classical music, has picked the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall at SUNY Fredonia to record the debut album of 16-year-old violinist Caroline Goulding, a rising talent who has already performed with major orchestras in Cleveland and Detroit and won several young-artist honors.

The Fredonia College Choir and guest soloists, along with professional chamber orchestra under the direction of Gerald Gray, will perform J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, in the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall at the SUNY Fredonia School of Music.

The Fredonia Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music, will perform a mix of classical and contemporary works on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. in the university’s Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall. Special soloists will be students who won the Concerto Competition earlier this semester.

The Fredonia Improv Collective is holding a concert on Sunday, Nov.  16, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge,  a member of the Fredonia School of Music faculty.  Featuring music created in the moment, the event is free and open to the public.

The Fredonia School of Music will be hosting “The String Experience,” a workshop for hihg-school-aged players of string instruments such as violin, viola, cello and bass.  Young musicians are invited to improve their practice and performance techniques, interact with other string players, and attend a recital by the SUNY Fredonia School of Music faculty.

A sound recording entrepreneur and the partner of an investment bank are being honored this weekend by SUNY Fredonia for outstanding achievement. Alumni John Poppo, '84, and Michael Petsky, '85, will be celebrated in separate events in Rosch Recital Hall and Cranston Marche.

SUNY Fredonia faculty members and students will be hosting “Double Reed Day,” a workshop for middle and high school players of double reed woodwind instruments, on Oct. 18, beginning at 9 a.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. 

A new SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office has returned to the Williams Center, but in a larger, more customer-friendly "digs." The office is now located in room G-144, which is directly across from its previous Williams Center location.

Nine faculty and guest artists will explore German Expressionism in a concert of 20th century chamber music Saturday, Oct. 4, opening with a discussion by Dr. Gordon Root at 7 p.m.  The exploration of the European creative movement of the first half of the 20th century opens Friday, Oct. 3, with the showing of the film, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." Both events in Rosch Recital Hall, and both are free.

In an address to be presented Sunday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall, Judy Shepard, mother of hate-crime victim Matthew Shepard, will explain how the tragedy of her son’s murder in 1998 spurred her campaign for justice and ultimately led to the founding of the Matthew Shepard Foundation to help carry on his legacy.

SUNY Fredonia Professor Stephen Kershnar will present the 2008 Kasling Memorial Lecture, “Counterintuitive Morality,” at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall. The Kasling Lecture recognizes a member of the faculty whose scholarly excellence has enhanced the reputation of the university.

The first Faculty Recital of the 2008-09 academic year features vocalist Lynne McMurtry, mezzo-soprano, on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. Pianist Alison d'Amato will accompany her. The performance is free and open to the public.

Local music lovers can feast their ears on magnificent chamber works performed by some of the world’s most talented young artists as The Quartet Program launches its third season in residence at SUNY Fredonia. The internationally renowned Ying Quartet opens the season with a special guest artist recital on June 28.

One of SUNY Fredonia's most inspirational graduates, Roberta Guaspari, will be the featured guest at the School of Music's annual convocation on Friday, May 9. An advocate for music education in public schools, Ms. Guaspari's story has been told via the feature film, "Music of the Heart," and the documentary, "Small Wonders."

A variety of small and large jazz ensembles will be featured on the first concert, including the SUNY Fredonia Big Band, the NSB Octet, the Meghan Koch Project and PEgan & the MagooGoo Dolls
