Reggie Watkins, a professional trombonist who has performed with such jazz and pop music icons as Dave Matthews, Dianne Schuur and Maynard Ferguson, will join the SUNY Fredonia Jazz Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 8.  He will first conduct a master class at 3 p.m., followed by a concert at 8 p.m., accompanied by the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble.  Both events are free and open to the public, and will take place in Rosch Recital Hall.

Travel/adventure filmmaker Fran Reidelberger will personally narrate his film “The Best of Bavaria” beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Rockefeller Arts Center’s King Concert Hall. Tickets for “The Best of Bavaria” will be available at the door. One child is admitted free with each adult ticket. Seating for this event is general admission.
 

SUNY Fredonia will hold a memorial service for U.S. veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose room. The ceremony will include the presentation of the first SUNY Fredonia Veterans Scholarship award to Charlene Miller, a U.S. Army veteran and current member of the National Guard.

On Wednesday, Nov, 11, the campus will welcome reality TV star Ruthie Alcaide, one of the more unique and memorable cast members of the hit MTV series, “The Real World," as a guest speaker for its Diversity Day. Events start at noon and she speaks at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center.

NASA's Jonathan Gardner of the Observational Cosmology Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center will talk about the new generation of space telescopes at the annual Harlow Shapley Public Lecture on astronomy to be held Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. in Room 202 McEwen Hall.

The annual community service event brings students and campus groups together to rake leaves at houses surrounding the SUNY Fredonia campus on Temple Street, Central Avenue and smaller side streets in the Village of Fredonia. Students, faculty, clubs and athletic teams participant to give back to the community and help the college build better relationships with the residents of Fredonia.

Student and faculty research projects in Jewett Hall biology classes are being greatly enhanced by the gift of a new Syngene gel documentation system, thanks to a donation by Dr. Christopher Mirabelli, '77, who has held senior research and development positions in the pharmaceutical industry.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, In the second of a four-concert series, “The Complete Works of Beethoven for Violin and Piano,” violin professor Maureen Yuen joins forces with piano professor Sean Duggan. Part three of the series will be presented on Wednesday, November 1, and the final concert of the series will be on Sunday, January 31, 2010.

The second Brown Bag Lecture in the College of Arts & Humanities will bring to life the thrills, chills, and backstage events involved in mounting an opera. The panel discussion entitled, “Putting It Together: The Art and Scholarship of Staging La Bohème,” will showcase selections from the opera set to open on November 12th on campus in Marvel Theatre. The talk will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4, noon, in Diers Recital Hall in Mason Hall (this is a new location for the series).

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music, in cooperation with the Department of Theatre and Dance, will present four performances of “La Bohème” in Marvel Theatre at Rockefeller Arts Center. Performance dates and times are Nov. 12, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.

SUNY Fredonia will host two poets, Dr. Ross Gay and Mr. Patrick Rosal, as part of the Mary Louise White Visiting Series. The poetry reading will be held at room 202 in McEwen Hall on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

The second of seven statewide conversations on the SUNY-wide strategic plan that will guide SUNY for the next five years is planned at the University at Buffalo on Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 8 to 2 p.m. at the Center for the Arts. An Open Forum to receive testimony and statements from any and all individuals will start the proceedings.
