Mexico study program preserving indigenous culture

Students in MexicoSix undergraduates have just finished the first annual six-week study-abroad program in Mexico this summer at the Ollin Tlahtoalli Centro de Lenguas y Cultura Mexicana. Located in Oaxaca, the center is dedicated to preserving endangered Mexican indigenous languages, the teaching of Spanish within a Mexican cultural framework, and the promotion of Mexican culture and traditions.

Senior TV host brings "Aqua Kids" show to WNY

Molly McKinney of "Aqua Kids"As hostess for “AquaKids,” a nationally syndicated children’s television program, SUNY Fredonia senior Molly McKinney has done location shoots in the Bahamas, where she monitored Caribbean reef sharks, and in Bimini, where she swam alongside wild spotted dolphins. But early this month, she brought her crew to tape shows in her college stomping grounds of Western New York.

Celebrating 1,300 grads and achievements

Members of the Class of 2008 celebrate their graduation.Approximately 1,300 students crossed the stage in Steele Hall on Saturday, as President Dennis L. Hefner conferred Fredonia’s 2008 undergraduate and graduate degree candidates. The day was filled with speeches and performances, friends and family, handshakes and hugs, which together produced an atmosphere of tremendous pride and lifelong memories.

Animation and video art showcased Friday night

Video art by Leanne MattarA lively collection of video art and animation accomplished by students this year will be showcased at the annual Transmedia Festival on Friday, May 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. in McEwen Hall Room 209. The festival celebrates the creative endeavors of the students taking courses in media arts and animation. Wind Ensemble heads to China --with 25 high schools in tow

Fredonia Wind EnsembleJust one day after performing at Commencement, the SUNY Fredonia Wind Ensemble will embark on an ambitious 10-day tour of China, where they will perform alongside Chinese student musicians and learn about the country’s music and culture. In addition, they will communicate with high school students in their home towns via a specially created blog which will chronicle their adventures.

Red Cross Blood Drive July 23
The American Red Cross will be conducting a blood drive on Wednesday, July 23, in McGinnies Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Please bring your American Red Cross donor card or photo ID with birth date.
 
Donors with blood types O negative and B negative are especially needed. All donors (even those who attempt to give blood but are not able to) are eligible to win a Family 4 Pack to Lake Erie Speedway.  Also, everyone will receive a coupon for Lake Erie Speedway for a buy one ticket, get one ticket free.

Technology Incubator will have tent at County Fair

The SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator will have a tent at the Chautauqua County Fair, July 21 through July 27, to spread the latest news about the incubator and its newest programs and services.  Incubator staff will be there to provide information about what the incubator can provide to entrepreneurs from throughout the region. They will be offering daily giveaway of SUNY Fredonia merchandise. Schell invites all to brainstorming session

SUNY Fredonia's new director of its Professional Development Center is inviting SUNY Fredonia professional and CSEA staff  to an open forum on professional development Tuesday, July 29, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Japanese Garden Room of Reed Library.  

This informal brown-bag event offers employees  the chance to meet with colleagues, fellow employees and the PDC staff, and to help the Center design staff-specific programs for the upcoming year. Dr. Schell will facilitate the brainstorming session. "I promise that we'll have fun!" she said.

Christina RausaAlumna Christina Rausa (Class of '77) will star as Golda Meir in the JRT production, Golda’s Balcony, June 5 through June 29 at MusicalFare Theatre, Daemen College. Ms. Rausa is one of the most lauded actresses in Western New York and an Artie Award winner for her previous solo work as Emily Dickinson in The Belle Of Amherst.
