Lori M. Dispenza, a U.S. Army Veteran and scholarship recipient at SUNY Fredonia, has been selected to speak May 28 at the 15th annual Memorial Day observance at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial in Arlington, Va. Dispenza, who served for 12 years in the Army, is now a senior majoring in psychology and minoring in criminal justice.

"Steadfast," a film by Phil Hastings, Visual Arts and New Media assistant professor, has been accepted for a three-month showing at the 18th Biennale of Sydney, Australia, which is known for showcasing the freshest and most provocative contemporary art around the world. Hastings will also give an artist talk.

Geosciences Professor Dr. Gary Lash (right) has been named the Kasling Lecturer at SUNY Fredonia for the 2012-2013 academic year, while Assistant Professor Dr. David Kinkela will receive the annual William T. Hagan Young Scholar/ Artist Award. The Kasling Lecture event will take place in October.

Birger Vanwesenbeeck, assistant professor of English, has published the article, "Loss in the Mail: Pynchon, Psychoanalysis, and the Postal Work of Mourning," in the scholarly journal, the Postmodern Culture  (published by Johns Hopkins University Press). Postmodern Culture has become a leading electronic journal of interdisciplinary thought on contemporary cultures.

More than 70,000 pounds of electronics equipment – enough to fill 69 skids -- was collected at SUNY Fredonia’s annual community household recycling drive April 21. Members of the men’s soccer team gave yeoman’s service by pitching in to unload a steady stream of nearly 600 vehicles on Ring Road, near the Services Complex, during the four-hour collection. 

Emily VanDette has been granted a $6,000 summer research stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Helen Williams, a SUNY Fredonia graduate and mother of actress Vanessa Williams, shares the spotlight in an enduring photograph on the front cover of a new biography, “You Have No Idea,” that she helped her famous daughter write. SUNY Fredonia will host a book-signing for both authors on Nov. 10. The widely anticipated book is the first by Vanessa, whose career includes starring roles on “The Right Stuff,” “Ugly Betty” and “Desperate Housewives.

SUNY Fredonia has begun partnering with the Smithsonian Institution in its global Tree Banding Project through a course taught by Education Professor Michael Jabot, "Teaching Science in the Elementary School Class" (EDU 403).

SUNY Fredonia has had a history of celebrating Earth Day since its origins in 1970. Two former students who were impacted by what they learned about the environment at Fredonia are Environmental Scientist Ryan Burke, '11, and Casey Whyte, '09. who works for the firm that will collect the electronic recyclables this weekend at SUNY Fredonia. 

Vice President of Academic Affairs Virginia Horvath wrote the article for Fredonia, in which she described two goals that the university pursued in its approach to the Red Balloon challenge. The goals were to engage faculty and staff in learning about influential perspectives in U.S. higher education, and build upon that knowledge to focus more deeply on planning for the campus learning environment.

This year marks Fredonia’s fifth straight year of participation, where it finished second place among all of the competing SUNY schools in RecycleMania’s Per Capita category. SUNY Fredonia was able to recycle 147,260 pounds or roughly 43 tons.

A total of 441 students at SUNY Fredonia raised $24,118 during the 2012 Relay for Life from April 21 to April 22. The amount of donations will benefit the American Cancer Society to help people fight against cancer.

The annual student athletics awards gala was held over the weekend, honoring this year's top seniors and other outstanding athletes. 

The Chautauqua Children's Chorale will perform its "Voices of Spring" concert on Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. 

Dr. Junaid Zubairi recently presented his innovative flight tracker system, under provisional patent with the SUNY Technology Transfer Office, at Techstorm New York, the first national event of its kind. The event featured technology presentations and a fast-paced matchmaking session, similar to a kind of speed-dating, for entrepreneurs and university representatives.
