The Fredonia School of Music will present Handel’s Messiah with two captivating performances—one in the acoustically acclaimed Rosch Recital Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus and a second at the architecturally beautiful St. Paul’s Cathedral in Buffalo, N.Y.

The New Horizons Band of Western New York will present a Fall Concert at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18 at Fredonia High School Auditorium in Fredonia, N.Y. The concert is free, but the band would appreciate donations of non-perishable food that will be donated to the Food Pantry of the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry.

Selected student ensembles from the Fredonia School of Music will perform half-hour Children’s Concerts on four Saturday mornings with two performances at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 am on Saturday, Nov. 14 in Dunkirk Free Library, 535 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. The experience allows children to touch and investigate musical instruments.

As part of the ongoing partnership with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the SUNY Fredonia School of Music welcomes 23-year-old Israeli pianist Roman Rabinovich for a master class with Fredonia piano students on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.

Reggie Watkins, a professional trombonist who has performed with such jazz and pop music icons as Dave Matthews, Dianne Schuur and Maynard Ferguson, will join the SUNY Fredonia Jazz Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 8.  He will first conduct a master class at 3 p.m., followed by a concert at 8 p.m., accompanied by the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble.  Both events are free and open to the public, and will take place in Rosch Recital Hall.

Celebrating Mendelssohn's 200th birthday, SUNY Fredonia Piano Professor Jonathan Mann will present a piano recital with special guests on Friday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music, in cooperation with the Department of Theatre and Dance, will present four performances of “La Bohème” in Marvel Theatre at Rockefeller Arts Center. Performance dates and times are Nov. 12, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, In the second of a four-concert series, “The Complete Works of Beethoven for Violin and Piano,” violin professor Maureen Yuen joins forces with piano professor Sean Duggan. Part three of the series will be presented on Wednesday, November 1, and the final concert of the series will be on Sunday, January 31, 2010.

The second Brown Bag Lecture in the College of Arts & Humanities will bring to life the thrills, chills, and backstage events involved in mounting an opera. The panel discussion entitled, “Putting It Together: The Art and Scholarship of Staging La Bohème,” will showcase selections from the opera set to open on November 12th on campus in Marvel Theatre. The talk will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4, noon, in Diers Recital Hall in Mason Hall (this is a new location for the series).

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music Rosch Musical Art Series will present its fourth annual collaborative concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) on Friday, October 30, at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.  The world-class symphony will be led by JoAnn Falletta, acclaimed by The New York Times as “one of the finest conductors of her generation.” YouTube carries an interview with Natasha Farny.

The Fredonia School of Music announced three showcase concerts to celebrate Family Weekend Oct. 16, 17, and 18. Friday night the students and faculty will present the Choral Showcase Concert; Saturday the College Symphony Orchestra will perform and Sunday, King Concert Hall is the venue for the Band Showcase Concert.

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music kicks off the 2009-2010 Rosch Musical Arts Series with an afternoon performance by internationally renowned Verdehr Trio. The event is Sunday, Oct. 11, at 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. This unique and dynamic ensemble will perform an eclectic mix of old and new. Members of the ensemble will talk about each piece from stage, creating an open and warm atmosphere in the concert hall.

The Musical Journeys Program of the Fredonia School of Music will kick off its fourth season of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children on Saturday, Oct. 17.  Planned with the help of SUNY Fredonia experts in music and education, the child-friendly environment will invite the children to sit on the floor close to the musicians.

The Fredonia School of Music is planning several special concerts for Homecoming, including the ever-popular Alumni Jazz Concert featuring jazz artists who got their start as students in the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble during the early 1970s.The concert will take place Friday, Oct. 9,. at 8 p.m. in Rosch  Recital Hall. Admission is free. This reunion will feature both former and current Fredonia Jazz Ensemble artists.

"An Evening of Art Song" will be performed by guest recitalists Alexander Hurd, baritone, and Alison D'Amato, pianist, on Friday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. The program includes works by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Hanns Eisler, and Mahler. Admission is free.

Retro, a Fredonia School of Music chamber group dedicated to the performance of high quality 20th century classical works, will perform a concert under the baton of Professor Rob Deemer on Sunday, Oct. 4, of William Walton's "Façade: An Entertainment," with poetry by Edith Sitwell.
