The Class of 2009 went out in style, as nearly 1,300 strong were conferred with undergraduate and graduate degrees by SUNY Fredonia's faculty and administration, while thousands of proud family and friends stood by. Joining them to help celebrate their Commencement ceremonies were keynote speaker and New York State Senator Cathy Young, as well as U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer.

SUNY Fredonia alumnus and Dunkirk native Sean Kirst, ’81, a columnist at the Syracuse
Post-Standard, has been named the winner of the Ernie Pyle Award for human interest writing, part of the Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards. He will be presented with the award during a dinner at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Friday, April 24.

A half-century after the death of beloved teacher Dr. Georgiana von Tornow, alumni returned to christen the lobby of the 400-seat Marvel Theatre in memory of the former speech and drama teacher who is considered the founder of SUNY Fredonia's theatre arts program.
