The SUNY Fredonia College of Natural and Social Sciences will hold its third Social Science Colloquium of the 2009-2010 academic year on Monday, Dec. 7, with Dr. Dani McKinney, assistant professor of Psychology, as the featured presenter. Dr. McKinney’s presentation is titled, “iTunes in the Classroom: Can Podcasts Replace Professors?” The event will be held at noon in W380 Thompson Hall.

The SUNY Fredonia student group Students Teaching Equals Positive Sexuality (S.T.E.P.S.) will host its third annual Chautauqua County AIDS Walk on Saturday, Dec. 5.  Registration will begin at noon in the Steele Hall Gymnasium, the indoor location where the event will be held this year. Dec. 4 will mark the 10^th anniversary of the SUNY Fredonia Campus-wide Donation Drive, an annual event in which the campus community bonds together to provide new or used toys and clothing and non-perishable food to those in need in the community. Their teaching tools -- from teeter-totters to balance beams to falling objects – were anything but high-tech, but easily accomplished the goal of bringing science to life at the Boys & Girls Club in Dunkirk.  Childhood education majors at SUNY Fredonia, all enrolled in Science for Elementary Educators course, hosted the science showcase featuring seven learning stations, to engage youngsters, ages six to 13, in actual science experiments.

The International Education office will host its third annual International Talent Show on Wed., Nov. 18 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Campus Grind. The event is part of International Education Week, Nov. 16 though 19.

Actor Evan Harrington, ’98, who is currently part of the Broadway cast of “Phantom of the Opera,” will return to campus the week of November 16 for a series of engagements, including a short concert on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Rockefeller Arts Center’s Bartlett Theater.

White water rafting in the Urubamba river, living in an islander’s home on Taquile island and meeting other travelers from all over the world are only a sampling of the amazing and memorable experiences Emily Zaita took home with her from Peru this past summer as this year’s Lundquist International Fellow.

Reggie Watkins, a professional trombonist who has performed with such jazz and pop music icons as Dave Matthews, Dianne Schuur and Maynard Ferguson, will join the SUNY Fredonia Jazz Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 8.  He will first conduct a master class at 3 p.m., followed by a concert at 8 p.m., accompanied by the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble.  Both events are free and open to the public, and will take place in Rosch Recital Hall.

Student and faculty research projects in Jewett Hall biology classes are being greatly enhanced by the gift of a new Syngene gel documentation system, thanks to a donation by Dr. Christopher Mirabelli, '77, who has held senior research and development positions in the pharmaceutical industry.

SUNY Fredonia sorority Alpha Phi Omega, together with the campus’ Residents Hall Association, will host a “Halloween Bash” on Saturday, Oct. 31 in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room from 1 to 5 p.m. The event is open to all SUNY Fredonia students as well as area high school students ages 15 and up.

Students at SUNY Fredonia joined their counterparts across the nation on Saturday, Oct. 24, heralded as a global Day of Action on climate change, as part of the 350.org international campaign to spur world leaders into resolving the growing climate crisis.

Fredonia placed third among 11 teams at the Northeast Preliminary International Collegiate Programming Contest was held on campus Saturday, Oct. 17. The University of Rochester and Hobart College took first and second place.

A $50,000 Wal-Mart Foundation SEMILLAS grant has been awarded to SUNY Fredonia from Excelencia in Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the success rate of Latino students in higher education.The grant will llaunch an innovative three-stage program designed to encourage and assist Latino students in obtaining a college eductaion.

SUNY Fredonia’s Volunteer and Community Service Department will host its third “Operation Breakfast Rescue,” an annual breakfast-food item donation drive that benefits the Chautauqua Country Rural Ministry.

Alumni of all ages gathered with campus officials in the Cranston Marché dining complex this afternoon to honor three of the university’s most accomplished alumni and steadfast university supporters. John G. Baust, Ph.D., ’65, Kimberlee Neifer Caldwell, Ph.D., ’87, and Clifton C. Turner, ’84 were honored by President Hefner at the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon. The three were given the Outstanding Achievement Award for their special contributions to society through their careers as well as their impacts on their alma mater.

Rocky Schenck, a photographer and music video director and writer, will be the first Visiting Artist of the Fall 2009 series sponsored by the Visual Arts Department at SUNY Fredonia. He will talk to the campus and community at an open lecture Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 p.m. in 209 McEwen Hall.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Earthworks and the new SUNY Fredonia Academic Community Engagement (FACE) Center will host a free screening of “Addicted to Plastic” (2008), at 7:00 p.m. at the Grange Building at 58 W. Main St. in downtown Fredonia. The event is free and open to the public.

How many doors can a Business Administration degree open for SUNY Fredonia graduates? For Clifton C. Turner (’84), it’s quite a few. And impressive ones, too. He will receive the Alumni Association's Outstanding Achievement Award on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Homecoming.
