Jazz/pop trombonist Reggie Watkins to perform with Fredonia Jazz Workshop

Reggie Watkins, a professional trombonist who has performed with such jazz and pop music icons as Dave Matthews, Dianne Schuur and Maynard Ferguson, will join the SUNY Fredonia Jazz Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 8. He will first conduct a master class at 3 p.m., followed by a concert at 8 p.m., accompanied by the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble. Both events are free and open to the public, and will take place in Rosch Recital Hall.

Alumni of all ages gathered with campus officials in the Cranston Marché dining complex this afternoon to honor three of the university’s most accomplished alumni and steadfast university supporters. John G. Baust, Ph.D., ’65, Kimberlee Neifer Caldwell, Ph.D., ’87, and Clifton C. Turner, ’84 were honored by President Hefner at the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon. The three were given the Outstanding Achievement Award for their special contributions to society through their careers as well as their impacts on their alma mater.

Scholars from around the world will be on campus Oct. 1-3 to take part in a three-day symposium devoted to the life and works of the prominent early 20th-century Austrian-Jewish author Stefan Zweig. Numerous archival materials from the university’s internationally renowned Zweig collection will be exhibited, many for the very first time. Other highlights include keynote addresses visiting scholars and a Zweig biographer, as well as the U.S. premiere of the Brazilian feature film, “Lost Zweig,” with director Sylvio Back in attendance.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, and in light of that sobering statistic, SUNY Fredonia will again co-sponsor the 6th annual "Out of the Darkness" walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and to raise awareness of the issue and the help that is available for students at risk. The three-mile walk takes place locally on Saturday, Oct. 10, starting at 1 p.m. at the campus clocktower.

There was no summer vacation in the drive for greater sustainability across the SUNY Fredonia campus. While many students were away from residence halls and classrooms, the university implemented a wide range of recycling, landscaping and energy-use initiatives during June, July and August.
