Scholars from around the world will be on campus Oct. 1-3 to take part in a three-day symposium devoted to the life and works of the prominent early 20th-century Austrian-Jewish author Stefan Zweig. Numerous archival materials from the university’s internationally renowned Zweig collection will be exhibited, many for the very first time. Other highlights include keynote addresses visiting scholars and a Zweig biographer, as well as the U.S. premiere of the Brazilian feature film, “Lost Zweig,” with director Sylvio Back in attendance.

Uniquely designed for a commercial environment rather than residential code compliance, an in-service training program for code compliance officers statewide was the brainchild of Anne Podolak, director of environmental health and safety, and Markus Kessler, director of facilities planning, at SUNY Fredonia. The program launched this month at SUNY Fredonia with 83 registered professionals from public and private colleges, as well as many state agencies.

This past Saturday SUNY Fredonia was host for an introductory workshop for chemistry instructors from throughout New York and Pennsylvania. The event introduced high school, college and university educators to POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning), a research-based learning environment where students are actively engaged in mastering course content and developing essential skills by working in self-managed teams on guided inquiry activities.

Victory in a regional competition in Tarrytown, N.Y., earned SUNY Fredonia's SIFE team a trip to the national competition in Philadelphia this May. The regional competition included more than 40 teams, including such prestigious and sizable universities as Penn State, Syracuse and Princeton, as well as fellow Western New York institutions Canisius College and St. Bonaventure University.

Details of the first-ever SUNYWIDE Film Festival are starting to take place, as the line-up for this inaugural three-day event was unveiled this week. The student showcase, with 13 short films made by students from across the SUNY system, opens at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2. On February 22, more than 130 Fredonia faculty and professional staff gathered in the Williams Center for the campus’ First Annual Conference on Teaching and Learning. Organized by the Office of Academic Affairs, its development is a part of the implementation of the strategic “Fredonia Plan,” developed in 2005. One of the plan’s initiatives focuses on the “culture of learning” and, among other components, includes a campus-wide event focused on this subject.

Two performances by Grammy Award winning classical guitarist Sharon Isbin, master classes and a luthier workshop will be among the highlights of the Art of the Guitar Festival at the State University of New York at Fredonia. The five-day festival, a collaborative effort of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music, the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, and the Fredonia Guitar Society, runs from Wednesday, Jan. 30 through Sunday, Feb 3.
