A $50,000 Wal-Mart Foundation SEMILLAS grant has been awarded to SUNY Fredonia from Excelencia in Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the success rate of Latino students in higher education.The grant will llaunch an innovative three-stage program designed to encourage and assist Latino students in obtaining a college eductaion.

SUNY Fredonia students enrolled in the class, “French Drama in Practice,” will present an 18th century French comedy titled, Le Jeu de l’amour et du hasard (The Game of Love and Chance,) by Pierre de Marivaux. The three-act romantic comedy will be performed in Diers Recital Hall Oct. 16 and 17.

Scholars from around the world will be on campus Oct. 1-3 to take part in a three-day symposium devoted to the life and works of the prominent early 20th-century Austrian-Jewish author Stefan Zweig. Numerous archival materials from the university’s internationally renowned Zweig collection will be exhibited, many for the very first time. Other highlights include keynote addresses visiting scholars and a Zweig biographer, as well as the U.S. premiere of the Brazilian feature film, “Lost Zweig,” with director Sylvio Back in attendance.

Representatives of the U.S. Postal Service will be on hand to help visitors at the Study Abroad Fair to renew or apply for new passports. The International Education center will host its annual Study Abroad Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 8 in the Multipurpose Room of the Williams Center from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Anyone needing passport services should bring an original birth certificate,two forms of I.D., and payment by cash or check.

Eighteen high school and college students from Turkey are visiting SUNY Fredonia in August and September as they finalize films they are making about democracy, human rights, and economic development, under the direction of SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Communication. The 18-month Youth Filmmaking Project in Turkey, led by Chair Ted Schwalbe and associate professor and Turkish native Nefin Dinc, has been underway for a year.

Eighteen Turkish students will be visiting SUNY Fredonia for two weeks this August and September as part of a SUNY Fredonia grant funded by the U.S. Department of State. Host families are needed to house students for two weeks beginning Aug. 24 through Sept. 9. Ideally, students will be placed together in groups of two or three.

Maryanne Long, a May 2009 graduate of SUNY Fredonia, has been elected to serve as the sole student representative of the Golden Key Honor Society International Leadership Council. Ms. Long, a native of Buffalo, served as secretary of SUNY Fredonia’s Golden Key Chapter during 2008. She graduated in May with a degree in Business Administration-Finance, and a minor in Economics.

The SUNY Fredonia International Education Center hosted its inaugural 3K fun run yesterday on the Fredonia campus. $2,248 was raised from registration, donations, and raffle ticket sales that went to the Xylia Peterson ’85 Memorial Fund. The proceeds provide scholarship assistance to junior or senior level international students who need financial assistance to complete his/her degree. Dubbed the “Slush Rush” because of the likelihood of the melting late winter snow, the “slush” was lacking due to the bitter 21 degree weather. However, the cold did not stop the 140 community members, faculty, staff, and students from participating in the polar bear run.
