The striking, nearly 1,600-cubic-foot sculpture known as “Popeye,” which has called the front walkway of Rockefeller Arts Center home for two years, has become a permanent installation on campus, resting on a concrete foundation just feet from where it has pleased observers since first brought to campus in 2007.

William Shakespeare’s timeless tale of two young star-crossed lovers has been brought to life by the Department of Theatre and Dance to close out the 2008-09 Walter Gloor Mainstage season. Directing the Mainstage production will be Tom Loughlin, who is creating "a world for the play which blends the Elizabethan classic and traditional feel of the play with a contemporary style and look.”

The SUNY Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra will join forces April 25 with the Masterworks Chorus and the Chautauqua Children’s Chorale to perform Carmina Burana by German composer Carl Orff, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge.

New videos of the preparation of fight scenes in Romeo and Juliet, the final Mainstage production of 2009 which opens this Friday, have recently been posted on "TaDa! Fredonia Theatre and Dance" blog.

An exhibition featuring the works of 17 students from the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at the State University of New York at Fredonia will be on display in the art galleries at Rockefeller Arts Center beginning April 17.

Like the song says, come and take the “highway that’s the best.” Rockefeller Arts Center at the State University of New York at Fredonia presents “Route 66 Part II: The Romance of the Road” a film by Charles Hartman on Saturday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.

SUNY Fredonia will host talks with Buffalo-based artists Jackie Felix and Bruce Adams, who currently have paintings on display in the Art Gallery as part of an exhibition entitled “Figure and Form: Explorations of Humanity.”

SUNY Fredonia saxophone professor Wildy Zumwalt will be featured during an April 3 performance with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of BPO resident conductor Robert Franz, in King Concert Hall. The program includes Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 6, Carl Nielsen’s Helios Overture, and Lars-Erik Larsson’s Concerto for Saxophone, in which Zumwalt will be featured.

The DuffleBag actors will begin the performance with the retelling of “Beauty and the Beast.” Just when the audience becomes enthralled by the story, a twist will be created ─ the narrator will invite an unsuspecting audience member on stage to play one of the main parts. He or she will be given a costume, props and guidance from the narrator during the performance.

The works of three Buffalo-based artists will be featured in the main art gallery in Rockefeller Arts Center beginning March 6. The community will also have the opportunity to hear the two of the artists talk more about their works. Entitled “Figure and Form: Explorations of Humanity,” the exhibit will feature selected paintings by Bruce Adams, Jackie Felix and George Hughes.

SUNY Fredonia’s School of Music will host guest artist Gail Williams, an internationally recognized horn player from Western New York. Students will have the opportunity to work with Williams in a horn master class on March 2 at 4 p.m., and the artist will be the featured soloist in the university’s Wind Ensemble Concert on Tuesday, March 3 at 8 p.m.

A satirical and ironic comedy with an underlying serious point, "Urinetown the Musical," will open Friday, Feb. 20 in Bartlett Theatre at Rockefeller Arts Center as part of the Walter Gloor Mainstage Series.

Costume Design professor Dixon Reynolds, together with a current student and a recent alum, formed a Fredonia trio that played a major role in the production of a Mark Twain comedy that, until 2007, had been unpublished and lost for more than 100 years.  See how they contributed to the success of the month-long performance.

The Foolz ─ Henrik Bothe (The Dapper Dane) and Woody Keppel (Woodhead) ─ will present “A February Festival of Fun” on Friday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in Marvel Theatre.  Veterans of film, television, radio and the stage, Bothe and Keppel have performed for audiences on six continents.

One of the most successful indie bands working today will be featured in concert at Rockefeller Arts Center on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall. Ball in the House, a soul-pop/R&B vocal band out of Boston, will take the stage for a one-night-only event.

The best works of student artists at SUNY Fredonia will be on display in the art gallery at Rockefeller Arts Center beginning Friday, Feb. 6.   The "Fredonia Showcase" will open on Feb. 6 with a reception in the Art Gallery lobby from 7 to 9 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

A journey through one of the most beautiful regions of Italy will take place on Saturday, Jan. 24 as Rockefeller Arts Center presents the travel/adventure film “Inside the Tuscan Hills” at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.  Narrating the film will be John Wilson, one of Canada’s top award-winning wildlife documentary filmmakers.

SUNY Fredonia will present a lecture-performance with Dr. Jessica Hillman, award-winning assistant professor within the Department of Theatre and Dance, together with several SUNY Fredonia students, at noon on Wed., Feb. 4, in Room S104 of the Williams Center.

Over 300 high school students and chaperones from 11 schools attended the semi-annual Drama Dance Day hosted by the SUNY Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance. After a welcome and information on admissions from Associate Professor Ted Sharon, some of the students attended workshops including Stage Combat with Professor Sharon, Computer Technology with Associate Professor Todd Profitt, Jazz Dance with Assistant Professor Samantha Kenney, and Costume Silhouette/Rendering with Assistant Professor Dixon Reynolds.
