Students at SUNY Fredonia joined their counterparts across the nation on Saturday, Oct. 24, heralded as a global Day of Action on climate change, as part of the 350.org international campaign to spur world leaders into resolving the growing climate crisis.

Fredonia placed third among 11 teams at the Northeast Preliminary International Collegiate Programming Contest was held on campus Saturday, Oct. 17. The University of Rochester and Hobart College took first and second place.

SUNY Fredonia’s Volunteer and Community Service Department will host its third “Operation Breakfast Rescue,” an annual breakfast-food item donation drive that benefits the Chautauqua Country Rural Ministry.

Student experiences and internship opportunities in Washington, DC will be the topic of an open forum Wednesday, October 21, 2-4 pm in S-104 of the Williams Center. SUNY Fredonia students recently interning in Washington, DC will be on hand to share important information and personal reflections about their internship placements and participation in the program.

Students in th biology department who were awarded Research Scholarships to pursue inquiries in 2009 will present the results of their studies at the annual Biology Deparatment Research Presentation Friday, Oct. 16, starting at 2:15 p.m. in Jewett Hall Room 101. Refreshments and a reception follows the two-hour event.

The Fredonia School of Music is planning several special concerts for Homecoming, including the ever-popular Alumni Jazz Concert featuring jazz artists who got their start as students in the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble during the early 1970s.The concert will take place Friday, Oct. 9,. at 8 p.m. in Rosch  Recital Hall. Admission is free. This reunion will feature both former and current Fredonia Jazz Ensemble artists.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, and in light of that sobering statistic, SUNY Fredonia will again co-sponsor the 6th annual "Out of the Darkness" walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and to raise awareness of the issue and the help that is available for students at risk. The three-mile walk takes place locally on Saturday, Oct. 10, starting at 1 p.m. at the campus clocktower.

SUNY Fredonia’s a cappella groups Much More Chill (all-male) and Some Like it Hot (all-female) will open for alternative rock singer-songwriter Ben Folds, who will perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) during a concert on Oct. 8 at Kleinhan’s Music Hall in Buffalo.

The incoming travel dates include: Sept. 29, and Nov. 29. Outgoing travel from Fredonia includes: Sept.  25 and 26, Nov. 20 and 21, and Dec. 17, 18 and 19.  Spring dates and times will be announced in later in the fall.  Reservations to use the shuttle must be made at least two work days in advance by calling or visiting the SUNY Fredonia ticket office at 1-716-673-3501 or 1-866-441-4928.

Fredonia State alumna Julia Hopson is a finalist for the 2009 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Hopson and eight other finalists were named Wednesday by the NCAA on its website. The annual award recognizes student-athletes for their accomplishments in their sports, in the classroom, as leaders, and for their service to others.

Students and faculty of the Fredonia School of Music Cello Studio will be traveling to Suffolk County, Long Island for performances at seven different schools from Sept. 14 through Sept. 17. The tour culminates with a recital back in Fredonia on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall, featuring Spanish-inspired music for cello and mixed ensemble.

SUNY Fredonia’s Career Development Office will host a Graduate School Fair on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. in The Williams Center. Representatives from more than 45 graduate programs located in numerous states will be present with information readily available to all SUNY Fredonia students and alumni.

SUNY Fredonia will receive a $50,000 grant to increase prospective Latino students’ and their families’ exposure to information about the college application process, financial aid, and campus life, the non-profit organization Excelencia in Education announced today. SUNY Fredonia was one of only twenty colleges and universities from across the nation chosen to receive the award.

By putting students in touch with opportunities for volunteerism, the annual Community Service Fair held at SUNY Fredoniais one of the many ways in which the Office of Volunteer and Community Services seeks to build partnerships between the campus and the community. On Wednesday, Sept. 16, more than a dozen local agencies will be on campus to talk about their needs.

Members of the SUNY Fredonia campus community are urged to sign up for SUNY NY-Alert, a secure, web-based emergency alert system implemented on campus and created and maintained by the New York State Emergency Management Office.

Welcome Week activities continue this week with the annual Activities Night, and entertainment provided by Frank Warren and his "PostSecret Project."  On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the popular Activities Night will be held on the green behind the Williams Center, allowing students to check out over 130 clubs and organizations run by students on campus.

Students from SUNY Fredonia and the country of Turkey will hold screenings of various films this week at three locations in Western New York. The films, created by high school and college-aged Turkish students, have been made as part of an 18-month Youth Filmmaking Project which has been underway for a year.
