Campus uses biodegradable de-icer for roads and walkways

Since early December, the grounds and landscaping crew has been treating all university roads, parking lots and walkways with a new product, aptly named Ice B’Gone, instead of conventional rock salt. The new de-icer is a combination of chloride salts and agriculture-based ingredients and is biodegradable, which means it’s less corrosion to bridges, road surfaces, highway equipment and automobiles. And that also means Ice B’Gone is safer for the environment.

SUNY Fredonia will compete against colleges and universities from Canada, India and Islampur over a 10-week period to measure the success of its recycling and waste prevention efforts. This year, 510 schools have agreed to participate in "Recyclemania." All 50 states and the District of Columbia are represented in 2009.

The Faculty Student Association announced its 2009 grants cycle for campus programs. The deadline to apply (applications must be hand-delivered) is Friday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m.
Through its program funds, the Faculty Student Association (FSA) supports various university activities that enhance the educational and/or cultural experience of the campus community.
The FSA Board of Directors reviews requests for support in March of each year. The Board will soon begin considering applications for support for the period June 1 through May 31, 2010.

With the exception of a few offices, college buildings will be closed, and heat reduced, beginning on the close of business Wednesday, Dec. 24, and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009. Employees will be asked to use their leave credits, but those who choose to work may do so.

SUNY Fredonia’s Center for Rural Regional Development and Governance (CRRDG) has established an advisory board that includes both SUNY Fredonia faculty and staff, as well as community leaders. Center Director Chuck Cornell said the creation of the board will further SUNY Fredonia’s vision of providing “greater support for the region's economic and educational development.”

The Coalition on West Valley Nuclear Wastes has donated 90 cubic feet of primary documents to the Archives and Special Collections at SUNY Fredonia. The materials, pertaining to the West Valley Nuclear Demonstration Project, have been collected and maintained over the last four decades by the Coalition, an activist group of primarily Cattaraugus and Erie County citizens.

In announcing the SUNY Fredonia for honorable mention in its national contest, the PETA2 website stated, “At Fredonia, the university has added vegan tortellini, vegan seitan subs and faux-chicken and faux-beef ramen stir fries, to the delight of the student population!” The judges added that Fredonia is a “rising star in the contest and we look forward to seeing them in 2009.”

An impressive total of 17 items – from plastic bottles to newspapers to tin cans – may now be deposited into one single recycling bin. Gone are the days when there were blue-colored bins for just paper in residence halls and offices, and students and faculty were asked to cart other recyclables to central collection sites in their buildings. Five students, all members of the local Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter, are assisting the Sustainability Committee by adopting the green recycling bin program for a class project in an upper-level Business Administration course.
