Gerald Mead, an award-winning artist and leading figure in the Buffalo art world, will present his recent work as part of the Department of Visual Arts and New Media’s Visiting Artist Program on Thursday, Nov. 5, 8:30 p.m., at 209 McEwen Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

Family-oriented fun is set to take center stage when Mo Willems’ Pigeon returns to Rockefeller Arts Center. The Kaleidoscope Family Series will present “Pigeon Party!” on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in Marvel Theatre. Squeezing all the fun of the first three Pigeon books into one raucous production, this lively show for children ages four and up is full of fun, feathers, laughter and excitement. It features original music and lots of audience participation.

The Fredonia School of Music announced three showcase concerts to celebrate Family Weekend Oct. 16, 17, and 18. Friday night the students and faculty will present the Choral Showcase Concert; Saturday the College Symphony Orchestra will perform and Sunday, King Concert Hall is the venue for the Band Showcase Concert.

Rocky Schenck, a photographer and music video director and writer, will be the first Visiting Artist of the Fall 2009 series sponsored by the Visual Arts Department at SUNY Fredonia. He will talk to the campus and community at an open lecture Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 p.m. in 209 McEwen Hall.

Family-friendly theatre will take center stage at the State University of New York at Fredonia this month as the Department of Theatre and Dance presents E.B. White’s beloved family classic “Charlotte’s Web” from Oct. 16 to 24 in Marvel Theatre. For convenience of children, all evening shows start at 7 p.m.

SUNY Fredonia students enrolled in the class, “French Drama in Practice,” will present an 18^th century French comedy titled, Le Jeu de l’amour et du hasard (The Game of Love and Chance,) by Pierre de Marivaux. The three-act romantic comedy will be performed in Diers Recital Hall Oct. 16 and 17. 

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music kicks off the 2009-2010 Rosch Musical Arts Series with an afternoon performance by internationally renowned Verdehr Trio. The event is Sunday, Oct. 11, at 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. This unique and dynamic ensemble will perform an eclectic mix of old and new. Members of the ensemble will talk about each piece from stage, creating an open and warm atmosphere in the concert hall.

The Musical Journeys Program of the Fredonia School of Music will kick off its fourth season of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children on Saturday, Oct. 17.  Planned with the help of SUNY Fredonia experts in music and education, the child-friendly environment will invite the children to sit on the floor close to the musicians.

As a professor of digital foundations at SUNY Fredonia, Peter Tucker has a unique artistic style. His work is characterized by a playful attitude of exploration and questioning. He is one of the newest members of the faculty in Visual Arts and New Media.  “I like the closeness of the community here at SUNY Fredonia,” Tucker said. “It is lovely to have an arts department this strong at such as small school.”

"Legacies in Words and Music," a special event planned during Homecoming Weekend, is a tribute to the late Robert Schweik, Distinguished Teaching Professor of English, and to the now retired Dr.Theodore Frazeur of Brewster, MA, who founded the percussion studies program at the Fredonia School of Music more than 50 years ago.

The Fredonia School of Music is planning several special concerts for Homecoming, including the ever-popular Alumni Jazz Concert featuring jazz artists who got their start as students in the Fredonia Jazz Ensemble during the early 1970s.The concert will take place Friday, Oct. 9,. at 8 p.m. in Rosch  Recital Hall. Admission is free. This reunion will feature both former and current Fredonia Jazz Ensemble artists.

SUNY Fredonia's Visiting Writers Series is hosting three writers making a name for themselves in the contemporary world of literature.  This semester's program features fiction writer Mike Czyzniejewski, who will open the series Thursday, Oct. 1, and poets Ross Gay and Patrick Rosa.

"An Evening of Art Song" will be performed by guest recitalists Alexander Hurd, baritone, and Alison D'Amato, pianist, on Friday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. The program includes works by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Hanns Eisler, and Mahler. Admission is free.

Ireland has long been a favorite destination for world travelers — and the Emerald Isle serves as the first stop in the 2009-10 World Travel Series. The travel/adventure film “Irish Stories and Glories” will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Rockefeller Arts Center’s King Concert Hall. The film series is sponsored by Fredonia Place as part of the 2009-10 Lake Shore Savings Season.

Retro, a Fredonia School of Music chamber group dedicated to the performance of high quality 20th century classical works, will perform a concert under the baton of Professor Rob Deemer on Sunday, Oct. 4, of William Walton's "Façade: An Entertainment," with poetry by Edith Sitwell.

SUNY Fredonia’s a cappella groups Much More Chill (all-male) and Some Like it Hot (all-female) will open for alternative rock singer-songwriter Ben Folds, who will perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) during a concert on Oct. 8 at Kleinhan’s Music Hall in Buffalo.

Jazz bassoonist, Michael Rabinowitz, and his Quartet, “Bassoons in the Wild” will present an informal concert and master class with fellow musicians Diana Herold,  Grisha Alexiev and Joe Fonda on Friday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. in Diers.

The Ethos New Music Society at SUNY Fredonia will host classical guitarists in a guitar-controlled video game battle. The “battle” will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m. in the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall on campus.
