The Office of Residence Life “did the math” and selected Jeremy Topolski, a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science, as winner of February’s “Student of the Month” award.

Topolski, a junior from North Tonawanda, was nominated for the award by Mathematics professor Joseph Straight in recognition of his active service to the campus and academic achievement. For starters, Topolski has been a resident assistant for the last four semesters and is the current president of the Mathematics Club. He was an RA for first-year male students at Chautauqua Hall for three of those semesters.

He’s known for taking great pride in this position and enjoys working with fellow residents to enable them to have a successful campus experience.

On the academic side of the equation, Topolski has proven to be an outstanding student, according to Straight. “I have had Jeremy in two upper-level math courses, MATH331 Abstract Algebra I and MATH335 Number Theory, and he has been one of the top students in the class. He is definitely Ph.D. material,” Straight said.

Topolski’s engagement with the campus extends to active membership on the Resident Assistants Advisory Board, Computer Science tutor and proctor, frequent participant in math competitions and Buffalo News Kids Day and volunteer at St. Vincent’s Home for the elderly. He’s also looking forward to being an Orientation leader this summer for incoming students.

Topolski counts the “kindness of the faculty, the campus size, the architecture of houses in the community” as standout features of Fredonia, and also enjoys the four seasons. He’s proud that the campus is “moving forward.”

After graduating from SUNY Fredonia, Topolski plans to attend graduate school and become a published mathematician.

The Student of the Month program was implemented in 2003 to recognize students who are well-rounded, excel in their academics and contribute positively to the campus and community. To nominate a student, visit www.fredonia.edu/reslife/studentMonthNominate.asp.
