Jud Heussler and Nick Gunner of Fredonia Radio Systems. Both are on the weekly show, "The Morning Inferno."
On the heels of a successful year of awards and other achievements, SUNY Fredonia’s Fredonia Radio Systems has gained national attention from the New York Times. An article focusing on college internet radio features Fredonia's all internet station WDVL 89.5 as an example of a college station using social media and other platforms to remain on the cutting edge of college broadcasting.
The article follows Jud Heussler, FRS General Manager and senior audio/radio production major at Fredonia, through hosting the Buffalo syndicated morning show, "The Morning Inferno" and communicates with listeners to share their ideas via “text” or “Facebook”. Fredonia Radio is featured in the article alongside other university stations including Yale’s WYBCX, Fordham’s WFUV and Princeton’s WPRB. The article will print in this Sunday’s issue of the New York Times and can currently be found online atwww.nytimes.com.
Heussler was initially contacted by the New York Times back in August. Impressed by him and all that FRS was working on in the start of the fall semester, a reporter visited the campus early in October and seemed extremely taken by the station and the students working tirelessly to maintain its high standards.
”We haven’t really been doing anything differently, we are just being recognized for hard work that has been going on for years,” Heussler commented on the recent publicity, “and we just try to be as innovative and creative as possible.” Heussler has been involved in FRS since his freshman year at Fredonia and spent two of those years as Program Director for WDVL.
