Scholars from around the world will be on campus Oct. 1-3 to take part in a three-day symposium devoted to the life and works of the prominent early 20th-century Austrian-Jewish author Stefan Zweig. Numerous archival materials from the university’s internationally renowned Zweig collection will be exhibited, many for the very first time. Other highlights include keynote addresses visiting scholars and a Zweig biographer, as well as the U.S. premiere of the Brazilian feature film, “Lost Zweig,” with director Sylvio Back in attendance.

SUNY Fredonia's Visiting Writers Series is hosting three writers making a name for themselves in the contemporary world of literature.  This semester's program features fiction writer Mike Czyzniejewski, who will open the series Thursday, Oct. 1, and poets Ross Gay and Patrick Rosa.

"An Evening of Art Song" will be performed by guest recitalists Alexander Hurd, baritone, and Alison D'Amato, pianist, on Friday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. The program includes works by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Hanns Eisler, and Mahler. Admission is free.

Ireland has long been a favorite destination for world travelers — and the Emerald Isle serves as the first stop in the 2009-10 World Travel Series. The travel/adventure film “Irish Stories and Glories” will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Rockefeller Arts Center’s King Concert Hall. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, and in light of that sobering statistic, SUNY Fredonia will again co-sponsor the 6th annual "Out of the Darkness" walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and to raise awareness of the issue and the help that is available for students at risk. The three-mile walk takes place locally on Saturday, Oct. 10, starting at 1 p.m. at the campus clocktower.

Retro, a Fredonia School of Music chamber group dedicated to the performance of high quality 20th century classical works, will perform a concert under the baton of Professor Rob Deemer on Sunday, Oct. 4, of William Walton's "Façade: An Entertainment," with poetry by Edith Sitwell.

SUNY Fredonia’s a cappella groups Much More Chill (all-male) and Some Like it Hot (all-female) will open for alternative rock singer-songwriter Ben Folds, who will perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) during a concert on Oct. 8 at Kleinhan’s Music Hall in Buffalo.

Jazz bassoonist, Michael Rabinowitz, and his Quartet, “Bassoons in the Wild” will present an informal concert and master class with fellow musicians Diana Herold,  Grisha Alexiev and Joe Fonda on Friday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. in Diers.

The incoming travel dates include: Sept. 29, and Nov. 29. Outgoing travel from Fredonia includes: Sept.  25 and 26, Nov. 20 and 21, and Dec. 17, 18 and 19.  Spring dates and times will be announced in later in the fall.  Reservations to use the shuttle must be made at least two work days in advance by calling or visiting the SUNY Fredonia ticket office at 1-716-673-3501 or 1-866-441-4928.

Fredonia State alumna Julia Hopson is a finalist for the 2009 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Hopson and eight other finalists were named Wednesday by the NCAA on its website. The annual award recognizes student-athletes for their accomplishments in their sports, in the classroom, as leaders, and for their service to others.
