Julius Paul, Ph. D., a professor emeritus in the political science department and a nationally known eugenics scholar, died Friday, Sept. 26. 

Sophomore and childhood education major Christine Padasak of Springville, N.Y., is one of 40 students nationwide with Cystic fibrosis who have received a $2,500 scholarship from Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc., based on her essay about achieving her goals despite living with the disease. She is now eligible for a $10,000 scholarship from the company which will be awarded through an on-line voting process.

The Presidential Debate of Tuesday, Oct. 7 is the focus of a DebateWatch program at SUNY Fredonia, which is one of a handful of hosts in New York State for the DebateWatch voter education program.

Dr. Jeanette McVicker, a recipient of the 2008 President’s Award for Excellence at SUNY Fredonia, will explore the topic, “Truth and Consequences: Adventures in Language, Literature and Culture,” during a lecture on Monday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m., at the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall. The event is free and the public is invited to attend

The Musical Journeys Program of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music will kick off its third season of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children. Selected student ensembles from the Fredonia School of Music will perform half-hour Children’s Concerts on four Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. beginning on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Darwin R. Barker Library.

Members of the SUNY Fredonia campus community are urged to sign up for SUNY NY-Alert, a secure, web-based emergency alert system implemented on campus and created and maintained by the New York State Emergency Management Office. The system will replace TextCaster, which is being phased out on the SUNY Fredonia campus

Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, will present the annual Maytum Convocation Lecture at SUNY Fredonia, “Human Rights: With Liberty and Justice for All?” on Wednesday, Sept. 24. She has also been named a Williams Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fredonia.

The School of Music at SUNY Fredonia is hosting a weekend celebration of 19th-century American band music Oct. 3 and 4. Nationally recognized scholars and conductors will be offering lectures, while  ensembles from the School of Music will be featured in a series of concerts highlighting the wind and brass music of early America, music of the Civil War, and the sounds of Sousa and Gilmore from the Golden Age of band music.

SUNY Fredonia School of Music faculty member and bassoonist Laura Koepke will give a recital Sunday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public. It will feature the works of Antonio Vivaldi, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Malcolm Arnold, Maurice Ravel, Michel Corrette, and Ernesto Nazareth

A new SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office has returned to the Williams Center, but in a larger, more customer-friendly "digs." The office is now located in room G-144, which is directly across from its previous Williams Center location.

Violinist Janet Sung and Grammy-nominated pianist Robert Koenig are performing a program of sonatas  on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall at SUNY Fredonia.

James Thomas Stevens (English and Native American Studies) has been invited to read his poetry at St. Mark's Poetry Project on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 131 E. 10th St., New York City.  Since its founding in 1966, the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church has been a forum for public literary events and a resource for writers.

The annual SUNY Fredonia Teaching and Learning Conference with the theme, “Redeeming the American Dream: Universities and the Future of Democracy,” will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, with Dr. Harry Boyte as the featured speaker

The SUNY Fredonia School of Music announced a vocalist, a horn player and four saxophone students who play as a quartet are the 2008 winners of its annual Concerto Competition, held every fall to select “the cream of the crop” among music students for solo performances in spring concerts.

New York Governor David A. Paterson has appointed Cynthia A. Ahlstrom of the Visiting Nursing Association to the SUNY Fredonia College Council. Her appointment became effective in August 2008, and she will serve until June 2015

Lake Shore Savings has again made a $10,000 commitment to support the arts and entertainment programming at the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

An acclaimed international theatre company will perform at SUNY Fredonia on its way to Broadway. Visible Fictions will begin the North American leg of its tour for “Jason and the Argonauts” in Rockefeller Arts Center’s Marvel Theatre on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m.  This family theatre production is a special Friends of Rockefeller Arts Center event that is open to the public.

Child’s Play Touring Theatre, which specializes in performing original works written by young authors, will bring “Kids for President” to Marvel Theatre at the State University of New York at Fredonia for a 7 p.m. performance on Friday, Oct. 3.

A recent graduate of Buffalo State College with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Arnand Perala has come to SUNY Fredonia as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. This is the third year that the university has received a grant from the U.S. agency for the purpose of promoting student involvement in local service organizations.
