Welcome Week activities continue this week with the annual Activities Night, and entertainment provided by Frank Warren and his "PostSecret Project."  On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the popular Activities Night will be held on the green behind the Williams Center, allowing students to check out over 130 clubs and organizations run by students on campus.

A Flood Victim Relief Drive held Wednesday and Thursday on campus yielded over 1,500 health and personal care items as well as cash, gift cards and gift certificates to benefit those affected by the recent flood damage in Silver Creek and Gowanda. Faculty and staff, students, and members of the community delivered contributions to the Williams Center.

Students from SUNY Fredonia and the country of Turkey will hold screenings of various films this week at three locations in Western New York. The films, created by high school and college-aged Turkish students, have been made as part of an 18-month Youth Filmmaking Project which has been underway for a year.

Frank Warren, the sole founder and curator of the PostSecret Project, will offer a lecture on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. in King Concert Hall.  The project is a collection of over 200,000 highly personal and artfully decorated postcards mailed to him anonymously from around the world, which are described as “displaying the soulful secrets we never voice.” The talk will be followed by a question and answer session and book-signing.

The school year begins with the annual Concerto Competition on Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m. in King Concert Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus. This event is free and open to the public.  This year, fourteen music majors vie for the honor of performing a solo with one of the School’s premiere ensembles.

The SUNY Fredonia 2009-2010 Phonothon, held October to November and February to April provides a great opportunity for students to earn money, learn basic telemarketing skills, and help the university.

The Fredonia School of Music’s first recital of the year takes place Saturday, Sept. 12 and features guest artists William Wolfram (piano) and Richard Hawkins (clarinet), with Fredonia’s violin professor Janet Sung in an evening of chamber music entitled, "Beethoven to Bartok- and Beyond."  On Sunday, Sept. 13, guest artist and Baroque specialist Pablo Mahave-Veglia will perform three Bach suites on Baroque cello.

President Dennis Hefner welcomed back the SUNY Fredonia community by reflecting on the many recent successes on campus, while looking ahead to the numerous exciting initiatives and events planned for the new academic year. He gave his semi-annual address to a standing-room-only crowd in Rosch Recital Hall on Friday, August 21.

The Division of University Advancement is pleased to announce the launch of two new alumni tools: a fully revamped alumni magazine, and a new alumni website, complete with a social networking section with content exclusive to Fredonia graduates.

SUNY Fredonia has earned the 14th spot among top public, master’s granting universities in the North in the 2010 edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” published by U.S. News & World Report.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 24, a full slate of Welcome Week activities with the theme, “Get Pumped,” will be hosted on campus for both new and returning SUNY Fredonia students. Come on out, see what Fredonia has to offer, and find what's right for you!

In 44 years of Fredonia State athletics, the campus never had a female NCAA national champion. Now it has two. Nobody saw this coming. Four years ago, as two freshmen from opposite ends of the state unloaded their relatively sparse possessions from their parents’ cars, no one could have envisioned how their collegiate journeys might end.

SUNY Fredonia will experience a record moment as it welcomes its most academically selective class in terms of standardized test scores and high school averages. As a result, Fredonia stopped accepting freshman applications in May — its earliest date ever — thanks to the record 6,600 applications it had already received from prospective freshmen, 2 percent higher than the record set last year.

SUNY Fredonia has launched FREDConnect — a special social networking online service exclusively for SUNY Fredonia graduates and friends.  FREDConnect allows alumni of Fredonia (as well as faculty, staff, seniors and other university supporters) to find long-lost friends, catch up with favorite faculty members, stay up-to-date on campus events and alumni reunions, and start or participate in a variety of discussion groups.

SUNY Fredonia has named Russell P. Boisjoly as the first Dean of its School of Business, designed to strengthen the quality and reputation of its business programs while leading the School as it pursues accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).  He was welcomed to campus on July 1 to begin his new position.

Eighteen high school and college students from Turkey are visiting SUNY Fredonia in August and September as they finalize films they are making about democracy, human rights, and economic development, under the direction of SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Communication. The 18-month Youth Filmmaking Project in Turkey, led by Chair Ted Schwalbe and associate professor and Turkish native Nefin Dinc, has been underway for a year.

Associate Professor of English Aimee Nezhukumatahil has been named the recipient of the 2009 William Thompson Award for Outstanding Alumni Career Achievement by Ohio State University.

Guest artist and Baroque specialist Pablo Mahave-Veglia will perform three Bach suites on Baroque cello in the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., at SUNY Fredonia. The three suites are widely considered to be among the best literature ever written and are favorites for scholars and amateurs alike.
