A Flood Victim Relief Drive held Wednesday and Thursday on campus yielded over 1,500 health and personal care items as well as cash, gift cards and gift certificates to benefit those affected by the recent flood damage in Silver Creek and Gowanda. Faculty and staff, students, and members of the community delivered contributions to the Williams Center.

The films, created by high school and college-aged Turkish students, have been made as part of an 18-month Youth Filmmaking Project which has been underway for a year.

Frank Warren, the sole founder and curator of the PostSecret Project, will offer a lecture on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. in King Concert Hall. The project is a collection of over 200,000 highly personal and artfully decorated postcards mailed to him anonymously from around the world, which are described as “displaying the soulful secrets we never voice.” The talk will be followed by a question and answer session and book-signing.

The school year begins with the annual Concerto Competition on Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m. in King Concert Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus. This event is free and open to the public. This year, fourteen music majors vie for the honor of performing a solo with one of the School’s premiere ensembles.

The Fredonia School of Music’s first recital of the year takes place Saturday, Sept. 12 and features guest artists William Wolfram (piano) and Richard Hawkins (clarinet), with Fredonia’s violin professor Janet Sung in an evening of chamber music entitled, "Beethoven to Bartok- and Beyond." On Sunday, Sept. 13, guest artist and Baroque specialist Pablo Mahave-Veglia will perform three Bach suites on Baroque cello.

SUNY Fredonia will experience a record moment as it welcomes its most academically selective class in terms of standardized test scores and high school averages. As a result, Fredonia stopped accepting freshman applications in May — its earliest date ever — thanks to the record 6,600 applications it had already received from prospective freshmen, 2 percent higher than the record set last year.

Eighteen high school and college students from Turkey are visiting SUNY Fredonia in August and September as they finalize films they are making about democracy, human rights, and economic development, under the direction of SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Communication. The 18-month Youth Filmmaking Project in Turkey, led by Chair Ted Schwalbe and associate professor and Turkish native Nefin Dinc, has been underway for a year.

Guest artist and Baroque specialist Pablo Mahave-Veglia will perform three Bach suites on Baroque cello in the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., at SUNY Fredonia. The three suites are widely considered to be among the best literature ever written and are favorites for scholars and amateurs alike.
