Eye-catching sculpture comes to SUNY Fredonia campus

Jumping out from the palette of gray and white concrete and green grass on the SUNY Fredonia campus is a 12-foot tall sculpture of intertwining steel spirals painted in a radiant shade of red. The sculpture is entitled “Popeye” and it is the creation of Brooklyn-based artist John Clement. It is on display on Symphony Circle Rockefeller Arts Center as part of SUNY Fredonia’s “In Sight/On Site” project.

Approximately 40 students from area high schools participated in the fourth annual computer science competition held May 14 at SUNY Fredonia by the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. The contests were: programming, spreadsheet, web design, internet scavenger hunt and quiz show.

The second annual Blue Devils Athletics Golf Tournament will be staged Sunday, July 29, at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk, N.Y.
Deadline for registration is July 21. The tournament is limited to the first 35 teams or 140 golfers. Entry forms are also available at the Athletics website (click on 2007 Golf Tournament, listed under "Other Links").

Rachel E. King, who compiled an impressive array of achievements during her SUNY Fredonia career, will receive the 2007 Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment at Fredonia’s afternoon Commencement on Saturday, May 12. Ms. King, from Syracuse, N.Y., will graduate with degrees in Communication/Public Relations and English. She compiled an outstanding grade point average at Fredonia and was the recipient of the 2007 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

The latest chapter in the educational careers of more than 1,100 students will be written Saturday, May 12, at SUNY Fredonia’s Commencement exercises at the Steele Hall arena. Separate ceremonies will be staged at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Candidates for graduation in May and August 2007 will be individually recognized, along with graduates from August and December 2006 and January 2007. Rachel E. King, of Syracuse, N.Y., will be awarded the Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment of the Fredonia College Foundation at the afternoon Commencement. She is a candidate for two degrees, a bachelor’s in Communication/Public Relations and a bachelor’s in English, Summa Cum Laude. Ms. King will be honored at the afternoon ceremony.

Architect picked to design new Children’s Center

An architectural firm based in Buffalo will shepherd development of SUNY Fredonia’s new $4.7 million Campus and Community Children’s Center, beginning with program design work and extending all the way through construction administration. Markus Kessler, director of facilities planning at SUNY Fredonia, said Flynn Battaglia quickly emerged as the clear front-runner during the RFQ (Requests For Qualifications) evaluation phase among 10 other firms. “They were ranked No. 1, and the second-ranked proposal was more than 2 points behind,” Mr. Kessler said in describing the rather considerable gap separating Flynn Battaglia from its nearest competitor.

The Fredonia Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Donald P. Lang, will launch their Great Britain Tour, a 17-day excursion that includes performances in historic churches and theatres in Wales and England, on Saturday, May 19. The tour will reunite Emma Hudson, a teacher, composer and music graduate of Oxford University, with Dr. Lang and the Chamber Singers. Ms. Hudson credits tri-annual visits by the Chamber Singers over the years and her brief study at a Fredonia Summer Choral program for her success in music. Ms. Hudson was just 2 years of age when she was introduced to the Chamber Singers.

During the nationally-observed “Take Our Daughters & Sons To Work Day,” the campus welcomed dozens of children of employees. Professor Jill Johnston-Price (Visual Arts and New Media) gave a one-hour workshop to allow children between 7 and 13 to see hands-on two-dimensional animation production. After the class, the children were given the opportunity to hand-paint small wooden flowers and sculptures in the Campus Center.

Chancellor Ryan presented the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence to SUNY Fredonia students Matthew Brysinski of Buffalo, an English major; Monica Erbacher of Newfane, a psychology major; Rachel King of Syracuse, a communication and public relations major; Abigail Losh of Cheektowaga, a communication and public relations major; and Kelly Maloney of Beaver Dams, a communication and public relations major.
