The Leader, SUNY Fredonia’s student-run newspaper, won two awards in editorial writing in the 2008 Better Newspaper Contest, the New York Press Association (NYPA) announced. “In a field of many screechy, preachy submissions, these editorials took a quiet leading role,” judges commented about the winning articles.

When the process of bringing the current production of “Romeo and Juliet” to life began, director Tom Loughlin had a clear vision of what he wanted to do. Instead of setting the production, which opened April 24 in Marvel Theatre at SUNY Fredonia, in a specific time period, Loughlin set out to “create a world for the play which blends the Elizabethan classic and traditional feel of the play with a contemporary style and look.”

SUNY Fredonia has reached a new campus record for freshmen applications, exceeding last year’s previous high of 6,538 received. The new mark stands at over 6,600 and will continue to rise as freshmen applications are still being accepted. Just as importantly, despite the challenging economic environment, freshmen deposits are ahead of last year’s pace, and university officials expect that the Class of 2013 will represent Fredonia's most academically selective incoming freshmen class to date.

The striking, nearly 1,600-cubic-foot sculpture known as “Popeye,” which has called the front walkway of Rockefeller Arts Center home for two years, has become a permanent installation on campus, resting on a concrete foundation just feet from where it has pleased observers since first brought to campus in 2007.

Health update on swine flu status

This afternoon Chautauqua County health officials confirmed that there is a probable case of swine flu (influenza A H1N1) in the southern portion of county, resulting from an adult and a youth associated with recent travel to Mexico. However, we are told that the individuals in question are nearly fully recovered and there continues to be no suspected cases on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

The Fredonia Jazz Ensemble has produced its first studio album in 16 years. The 19-member group will unveil the CD, entitled, "Still Kickin'," at a special release concert and reception on Sunday, April 26, at 5 p.m. in Diers Recital Hall. During the past year the group took a hiatus from the spotlight to re-energize itself, and the result — “Still Kickin’” — has garnered considerable praise even before its planned release.
