An opening reception to launch the one-month visit of the Emmett Till Traveling Exhibit in Reed Library will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 4 to 5 p.m. with a talk by Professor Saundra Liggins. Other events are planned throughout the month, including the showing of the film, "The Untold Story of Emmett Till" on Feb. 4, and a panel discussion on how the murder of a 14-year old spurred the Civil Rights Movement in America.

The best works of student artists at SUNY Fredonia will be on display in the art gallery at Rockefeller Arts Center beginning Friday, Feb. 6. The "Fredonia Showcase" will open on Feb. 6 with a reception in the Art Gallery lobby from 7 to 9 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

Players from the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils Mens hockey team took time out of their busy practice schedule to get together with students from the Upward Bound Program at SUNY Fredonia. The Upward Bound Program students and staff have been collecting donations for the American Cancer Society to help the team with their efforts in the “Power Plays for Cancer”.

FREDONIA, N.Y. — Jan. 29, 2009 —The College Tutoring Services office (CTS), together with the Learning Center, the Full Opportunity Program, Disability Support Services for Students and the Educational Development Program, is now hiring students to join its tutoring staff for the 2009/2010 academic year.
CTS tutors are paid an hourly wage to work a scheduled number of hours, from 2 to 6 p.m., for drop-in students at the Learning Center or in one-on-one hourly sessions with specific students assigned by the program.
“Working as a tutor not only pays but has proven to be a golden credential for students seeking admission to graduate programs, competing for jobs, fellowships and teaching positions,” said Learning Center Director Liza Smith.
Applications are available in the Educational Development Program Office, the Learning Center, and online at www.fredonia.edu/tlc. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 13 by 5 p.m. All applications must be submitted to the Learning Center on the fourth floor of Reed Library.

The Faculty Student Association announced its 2009 grants cycle for campus programs. The deadline to apply (applications must be hand-delivered) is Friday, Feb. 12, at 5 p.m.
Through its program funds, the Faculty Student Association (FSA) supports various university activities that enhance the educational and/or cultural experience of the campus community.
The FSA Board of Directors reviews requests for support in March of each year. The Board will soon begin considering applications for support for the period June 1 through May 31, 2010.

Poetry professor Nezhukumatathil named NEA Fellow

Competing against roughly 1,700 applicants, Poetry Professor Aimee Nezhukumatathil was one of 42 writers to recently receive Literature Fellowships for poetry awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The NEA award provides $25,000 to each recipient for the creation of new works. The NEA’s selection process is based on 10 poems and a brief statement by the author.
