On Thursday, April 26, more than 150 SUNY Fredonia students will be exhibiting their scholarly and creative works at the annual Student Research and Creativity Exposition. The event takes place in the Williams Center from noon to 7 p.m. All members of the campus community are encouraged to come by and talk to the students about their research and performance. At 4 p.m., following welcoming remarks to the guests from President Dennis L. Hefner and Academic Vice President Virginia Horvath, keynote speaker Dr. Paul Gestwicki, a member of the computer science faculty at Ball State University, will give a talk entitled, "The Importance of Immersion in Research and the Arts." Dr. Gestwicki received his bachelor's degree from SUNY Fredonia in computer science in 1998. A reception is planned afterward.

Students plan Environmental Fair at high school

An Environmental Community Fair will be held at the Fredonia High School gymnasium on Saturday, April 21, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The activities, aimed at both children and adults, are free and all are welcome. The Student Association’s environmental affairs committee at SUNY Fredonia is sponsoring the event. “This is a chance for our entire community to gather together and learn about how each person can have an amazing effect on the world around them. Each individual in our community has the power to spark immense change,” said Ashley Andrews, a freshman English major who is an officer in the Student Association’s environmental affairs committee.

“The World, the Society, and My Reflection … the Person in the Mirror” is the theme the 2007 People of Color Concerns Conference, sponsored by the SUNY Fredonia Black Student Union, Latinos Unidos, and the Alumni Office. The Black Student Union Fashion Show, a 31-year tradition at Fredonia, is a feature of the conference. It takes place Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center. Boyce Watkins, an author; John Elmore, a Buffalo attorney; and Pastor Roderick L. Hennings, of Zion Dominion World Ministries, Buffalo, are key presenters. Various community leaders, SUNY Fredonia officials and Fredonia BSU alumni will also participate in the two-day conference.

The Musical Journeys Program of the Fredonia School of Music has launched a new series of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children. Selected student ensembles from the Fredonia School of Music will perform four, half-hour Children’s Concerts on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. concluding on April 28 in the multi-purpose room of the Chautauqua County Home, 10836 Temple Road in Dunkirk.

“Tally-Ho,” a concert celebrating the music and career of
Dr. Donald Bohlen of the Fredonia School of Music, will be performed Saturday, April 14, in Rosch Recital Hall at 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Ethos New Music Society, a student group at SUNY Fredonia, is sponsoring the concert in honor of Dr. Bohlen, who founded the group in 1977 and has been its advisor for 30 years. The concert will feature music by Dr. Bohlen as well as by some of his past and present students, including

Fredonia SIFE team wins Regional title again

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say SUNY Fredonia “owns” the SIFE USA Regional Competition. Fredonia’s SIFE team has won the event the last nine times, and this year’s competition, held March 28 in Cleveland, wasn’t any different. “This victory was especially gratifying,” said team advisor Joseph Izzo, marketing professor in the business administration department. “The team dedicated this competition to Dr. Franklin Krohn, who was the adviser since the team began 13 years ago.” The National competition, to be held in Dallas, Texas, in May, is the team’s next destination.

The Chautauqua League of Women Voters is sponsoring a panel discussion on the media's use of the Internet for presenting news and engaging new audiences. "Blogs, Wikis, and Newsfeeds: The Internet and Other Media," will be held Monday, April 16, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the SUNY Fredonia Williams Center, Room S104. The program is free, open to all, and includes dessert.

Free testing for hearing, speech-language and vision for all ages will be offered to the public on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. until noon at SUNY Fredonia. In addition, testing for ambliopia (lazy-eye in children) will be offered to young children. Individuals and parents are encouraged to attend the free testing service if they have any concerns about their own or a family member’s speech-language, hearing or vision.

Two seniors and a junior at SUNY Fredonia will receive Rosa Parks Scholarship Awards, which celebrate creative works that examine multiculturalism or cultural pluralism, at a ceremony Thursday, 5 p.m., at the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall. This year’s recipients and their respective award-winning entries are: Ashley Portman, a senior psychology major, East Windson, N.J., “Of Motherhood in America,” a poem; Sarah Offenbach, a senior English and sociology major, Olean, N.Y., “So What if We’ve had the Vote for 87 Years?,” an essay; and Marcelle Grant, a junior public relations major, New York City, “The Great Integrator,” a poem.
