Izmir University of Economics professor to discuss condom ad campaign
Wednesday, September 04, 2013

Izmir University of Economics Professor Yesim Kaptan will give a presentation focused on how an advertising agency in Istanbul, Turkey, created an advertising campaign that constructed a new identity based on the intersections of race, discourse of disease and gender for Benetton condoms. The presentation -- the first of this semester's International Learning Brown Bag talks -- will take place on Monday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. in 127 Fenton Hall (a.k.a., the English Reading Room).

“Marking Differences, Consuming Identities: Race, Sexuality and Identity in the United Condoms of Benetton Campaign” is the title of Dr. Kaptan’s presentation, hosted by the Coordinator of International Learning (COIL) and intended for faculty in all SUNY Fredonia departments.

Kaptan, assistant professor of Communication, received her Ph.D. from Indiana University. She is visiting SUNY Fredonia for three weeks as part of SUNY’s Levin Fellowship Program. Her primary research focuses are nationalism, globalization and advertising.

Light refreshments will be served after the talk, which is free.
